About Shanghai Stock Exchange
Re-established in 1990 (its predecessor closed in 1949 after the Communist revolution), the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) is the largest stock exchange in mainland China by market capitalization. It lists A-shares quoted in renminbi (CNY) and dollar-denominated B-shares, and is regulated by the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC). Listings are heavily weighted toward state-owned enterprises (SOEs) — particularly the major Chinese banks, energy giants, and insurers. In July 2019 the SSE launched the STAR Market (Sci-Tech Innovation Board), Shanghai's Nasdaq-style venue for tech and biotech IPOs with a registration-based regime.
