About Johannesburg Stock Exchange
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) was founded on November 8, 1887 to fund the burgeoning gold-mining industry on the Witwatersrand and is the largest stock exchange in Africa by market capitalization. It is operated by JSE Limited, itself listed on the JSE since 2006. The exchange is heavily weighted toward resources (Anglo American, Sasol, AngloGold Ashanti), financials (Standard Bank, FirstRand, Discovery), and consumer giants such as Naspers/Prosus. The JSE Top 40 is the blue-chip benchmark.
